Benjamin Franklin once said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” As we head into the peak of Hurricane Season for the Atlantic Basin (the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico), you will likely hear that it’s essential to be prepared now if a hurricane strikes your area.

As the US economy opens back up from the pandemic, many employers are finding it difficult to fill positions to meet demand, especially for openings for maintenance technicians and facility managers. The shortage of skilled workers didn’t occur overnight. In fact, it has been decades in the making, which we will explain in a moment. But the pandemic and subsequent reopening certainly has exacerbated those conditions, and the talent gap continues to grow. 

Last week, the CDC eased its mask guidelines and now advises that fully vaccinated individuals can stop wearing masks and social distancing, except in certain environments and under specific conditions where extra precautions are necessary. We are turning a corner in the fight against the pandemic, but the world we’re entering is likely to be different than the one last March before everything shut down.

As more Americans become vaccinated, it’s important to know that some things might change for good. For one, multiple surveys indicate that COVID-19 will have a lasting effect on the general public’s expectations of cleanliness. Cleanliness has always been important for client perception and employee morale, but it clearly will be on their minds anytime they enter your building. 

Spring is finally here, which means Mother Nature is at work renewing the sights and sounds we associate with the warmer months. Pretty soon, the grass will be green, flowers will begin to bloom, and this writer’s seasonal allergies will return. 

If your company is still working from home to keep employees safe, you are not alone. Until the pandemic recedes, many companies are allowing employees to work remotely. And some may never come back to the office, putting companies in a bind when it comes to facility services. Having an in-house janitorial staff makes sense when there are people inside of the buildings. When the building is empty, though, there is only so much work to do.

The cannabis industry was one of the clear winners of the 2020 elections as voters in five states voted to legalize marijuana in some form. New Jersey, Arizona, and Montana legalized recreational use, and medical marijuana will be permitted in Mississippi. South Dakota took the unprecedented step of legalizing medical cannabis and marijuana for recreational use at the same time.

Earlier this month, the Northeast experienced a significant winter snowstorm that dumped double-digit snow totals in New York and Boston. If you live in the Binghamton, NY area, you saw nearly 40 inches of snow come down during the two-day storm.
